What to Do About Your Java Blues

Java

You know, I love java. A good, hot cup of it gives me that mental boost that I like to have when doing blog posts like this one.

On the other hand, Java (with a capital J), is giving me and many other people a headache right now. That’s because hackers are having a field day with it.

I pity the makers of Java right now.

In mid-January of this year, Homeland Security recommended that everyone disable Java unless you absolutely need it. I personally am taking that recommendation seriously. That unfortunately can cause a problem with some aspects of my teens’ online school. Their online class sessions, for example, use Blackboard which requires Java.

Hmm…what to do.

Well, let’s take a look at what Java is and a possible solution to this situation. Continue reading

It’s 11am and My Daughter is Done With Her Online High School Coursework

11am

I was amazed today. My teen finished all of her online high school coursework by 11am. Yesterday she finished by 2pm.

I’m so jealous. I would have loved to be able to do that when I was in high school, but online schools didn’t exist back then.

That’s okay. I’ll let go of my jealousy and move on.

The reason my daughter is getting done so early is because of a new system she is trying. I think it will work out well this semester. Want to know what it is? Continue reading

On the 12th Day of Christmas My True Love Gave to Me…a Surface Tablet

Microsoft Surface tablet

Envision this.

A device that acts like both a tablet and a laptop, has a USB port, and can have 2 apps open at the same time with a split screen.

That describes the new Microsoft Surface tablet and I want one on the 12th day of Christmas.

With a Surface tablet, my kids and I can be more productive when we’re on the go so it would be the perfect addition for our Mobile School.

I like to be productive, don’t you? And I like it even more when my kids are productive. ;)

Raise your hand if you like YOUR kids to be productive.

I thought so.

Well then, let’s just see what the Surface tablet can do for you and your kids. Continue reading

On the 11th Day of Christmas My True Love Gave to Me…a Digital Camera

Click.

Cameras. The perfect gadgets for capturing those funny, cute, exciting, delightful, spontaneous moments in our lives.

That’s why I want one on the 11th day of Christmas. My teens are growing up and which leaves me only a short time to capture images of them as they mature and blossom.

A camera is also a handy dandy device to have for an online school. Here’s why: Continue reading

On the 10th Day of Christmas My True Love Gave to Me…a Keyboard

Do you type a lot?

I do. In fact, I type so much that sometimes smoke drifts up from my keyboard. That’s why I need a really good one. That’s why on the 10th day of Christmas, I would like a keyboard.

Keyboards are handy for not only desktop PCs, but laptops too. We use external keyboards with our laptops. It’s much more comfortable and ergonomically correct that way. Have you ever typed for a long time on a laptop? Either your hands are up too high and your wrists are bent at odd angles or the whole thing is too low and you get a neck ache. An external keyboard, on the other hand, can be put in a comfortable place.

Now, I know that keyboards are a personal thing. You want to have just the right one for you. To complicate things, there is quite a large variety of keyboards on the market. They are all a part of what I call…The Keyboard Family.

The Keyboard Family.

Hmm. That sounds a lot like The Addams Family.

Okay. This is an opportunity I can’t pass up. I have to write a song.

So here goes. Continue reading
