I think that it is important for children to be able to read a map and do other map skills in spite of the fact that we have GPS and other modern technology. Tech can fail but a map can always get them where they want to go if they know how to read it.
Some homeschool geography curriculum and history curriculum have map reading skills embedded in them and some do not or just have a very limited amount. If the curriculum you have doesn’t teach map skills as much as you’d like or if you just want to spend some time giving your kids a thorough understanding of maps, you might want to get resources that do just that.
Recently, I went looking for materials that teach map reading. I have them listed for you below. If you don’t find everything you want in that list, you might want to check out my posts about complete homeschool curriculum and educational marketplaces. They will have even more geography resources you can use.
