Spelling practice doesn’t have to be boring.
Yes, it IS important for children to practice copying the words down on paper, but fortunately that doesn’t have to be the only activity that they do.
Nowadays, there are plenty of websites that have online games and printables with fun activities that children can use to practice spelling words. They can make an otherwise dull subject a bit more interesting.
Below is a list of online resources you can use for spelling practice. Some of these sites allow you to enter in your own list of spelling words. Others have ready-made lists. All can be used to add a little pizzazz to your spelling program.

Spelling City: This site offers games, tests, and flashcards. Some activities are free and others require a premium membership.
Kids Spell: Has a variety of online spelling games for children use either a ready-made or custom list.
AAA Spell: Offers a variety of online exercises for spelling lists, vocabulary lists, and alphabet practice.
PBS Kids: Various word and spelling games for younger children, some which feature PBS characters like Clifford.
Funbrain: Online activities that require the child to identify the incorrectly spelled words and correct them from ready-made lists.
Coolmath-Games: Although it is a math site, Coolmath offers a lot of well-designed word games for kids.
ABCya: Has online spelling games for various grade levels made from the Dolch word list.
SoftSchools: Has spelling games and worksheets which you can create from your own spelling lists.
Enchanted Learning: Offers a variety of printable spelling worksheets and activities.
Scholastic Spelling Wizard: When you enter in a word list, you can make a spelling scramble or a word search to print off.
